Adapting history into plays is recurring in Iran and the rest of the world. Analyzing the successful examples of these adaptations based on a specific framework could pave the way for others. Limiting to the extent that they stay historically relevant and neglecting literary criticism, leads to many aspects of them being excluded from the scope of the study. In this way, the basic question we face is how to dramatize a historical phenomenon and what characteristics a historical drama should observe. We want to explain this by examining an important Iranian historical drama based on a theoretical framework. The prominent Marxist critic, Georg Lukacs, in his book “Historical Novel” presents five components that a historical drama should observe including “facts of life”, “world-historical individuals”, “public character”, “translation into human terms” and “taking place in the present”. In this descriptive-analytical research, one of the most famous Iranian historical dramas, “the Death of Yazdgerd”, written by Bahram Bayzaei, will be discussed based on Lukacs’s view of “historical drama” and his five components. The findings of this study suggest that among the five components considered by Lukacs, four components, namely “facts of life”, “public character”, “translation into human terms” and “taking place in the present” can be found in Beyzai’s drama. And considerably, according to Beyzai’s approach to the history, the “taking place in the present” is more notable in his works. Basically, Beyzai deals with history to pinpoint something in his contemporary society. However, the most distinctive difference between his work and Lukacs’s components lies in the way that  “world-historical individuals” appear, because Lukacs believes that people close to the core of the power are suitable for the role of world-historical heroes because they are different and more exposed to the power Impact. But Beyzai chooses his heroes from ordinary people or low-ranking government officials. This is not a coincidence, but it is related to Beyzai’s approach to the history. One of the criticisms Beyzai imposes on traditional historiography is not to take ordinary people into account.

Violence is one of the most prominent elements in the works of Martin McDonagh, which can be observed not only in his plays but also in his films. This element is linked to a concept called “boredom” in his early trilogy of plays known as the Leenane trilogy, which can also be considered a foundation for the trilogy. Notably, McDonagh establishes the relationship between boredom and violence considering the political relationship between England and Ireland at the time. This relationship, which has a colonial nature, is evident both in the historical period of the plays and in the relationships between the characters. McDonagh directly refers to it in the first episode of the trilogy. In this study, to elucidate the relationship between boredom and violence, these concepts are first examined from different perspectives. Then, relying on Hannah Arendt’s theory of violence, this relationship is analyzed and studied in three plays: The Beauty Queen of Leenane, A Skull in Connemara, and The Lonesome West. Accordingly, the main question of this research is the process of transforming boredom into violence. Data collection has been carried out through library research and qualitative analysis has been applied as the research method. The results show that boredom and violence have a causal relationship with each other, and boredom can be the cause of the violent tendencies of the characters in the Leenane trilogy. Most of these characters who resort to violence are somehow involved in boredom, and the cause of this boredom is four factors imposed on them from outside. These factors cause the characters to feel a lack of something in their lives, which is closely related to the feeling of boredom. Finally, due to their lack of motivation, the characters resort to violence when faced with serious obstacles to achieve their goals.

The present study aims to formulate and redefine the concept of the theater market as a system of property rights by applying justice-centered theories of political economy and relying on three main approaches libertarian, contractual, and Hegelian. As well, the key concepts such as value, ownership, and material and intellectual rights will be studied. Furthermore, the analysis of the property rights system includes three parts the production phase (the rights of all producers; i.e. artists), the distribution phase (the rights of the distributors; i.e. the state or the theatre owners), and the consumption phase (the rights of society in cultural consumption). Based on the indicators obtained from each approach, their implementations in the theater will be examined. The next step is to evaluate the results of this analytical comparison by the central question of the research of how to define the concept of the theater market through the lens of political economy. In the end, the formulation of the theater market is obtained based on the characteristics derived from the justice-oriented approaches and the characteristics of property rights. The theater market is a market emerging from the society that organizes the triple relations of production, distribution, and consumption of theater based on the three principles of honor, humanity, and individual identity. This market comes into existence in a network of exchange relations with the government and the governing law of that society and maintains itself.

This article applies discourse analysis to study the formation of theatre sub-field including cultural and artistic characteristics in the 1990s Iran, based on Pierre Bourdieu’s theoretical perspectives. The focus of this article has been on the 1990s, a time when a new wave of theater movements emerged and different works were created compared to previous decades. Respectively, the key question is what are the most important characteristics of a distinctive product in the 1990s. Accordingly, Teun A. Van Dijk’s discourse analysis had been applied to study “khane-va-de (family)” play by Mohammad Mosavat.  The findings indicate the formation of dimensions and capitals, the most prominent features of which manifest in aspects such as prioritizing performance over text, the absence of a central hero, typical characterization, complex staging, minimal decor, and empty scenes, a phenomenological view of the body, the dominance of post-dramatic theater, and borderless geography. In fact, “khane-va-de (family)” play has been written and performed to convey its specific concepts and discourse (the new field plan) against two levels of meaning and reasoning (the prevailing traditions) and to do so, it has clung to concepts such as simple decor, opposition to the text without a hero, and emphasis on global values beyond geography.

A puppet is a symbolic and metaphorical element of persons, shapes, animals, and plants on the stage. The character that the creator (puppet artist) and the audience have both agreed upon its appearance, is brought into imaginary life by the human actor (puppeteer) who directly controls it. Controlling or animating can be done through physical contact like hands and feet or through other movement mechanisms such as threads, wires, and wooden or metal rods. This animated figure (puppet) is nowadays controlled even electronically or remotely but can be understood as a theatrical puppet only if the performer or player is present on the other side of the cable or device. The main goal of this article is to examine Eduardo Gordon Craig’s Ubermarionette theory in Puppet Theater considering definitions since provided of actor and puppet ontology. The article also aims to examine this theory by the puppet and its puppeteer as an actor. The main question here is how the dual confrontation of the puppet and the human actor can be defined by Craig’s Ubermarionette theory. However, each of the two types of actors (puppets and humans) has its limitations and possibilities. When the puppet comes to life, the audience imagines it alive like an actor and communicates with it. Finally, with a critical look at Gordon Craig’s point of view, we examine the capabilities, limitations, and theatrical possibilities of the actor and the puppet and the possibility of replacing them with each other because we believe that the puppet and the actor are playing roles while living independently. This research has applied the descriptive-analytical method and collected data from library sources as well as authoritative articles and references available on the Internet.

Body studies go back to mind-body dualism, the view that is known with its most important commentators, Plato and Descartes. They believed in the separation of the body and mind. However, in the late 1960s, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, a French-based phenomenologist, went beyond the previous view and introduced embodiment. Body studies embrace an infinite range of body domains like women-men, urban-rural and individual-social bodies. Body is a substance that lives in the world with its own customs, ideas and experiences. Man has different bodies which is known as the plurality of the body. In times of necessity, he knows to call which one of these bodies and forget the rest. This also comes true when an actor wants to come to the stage. In the early 20th century, Oscar Schlemmer propounded new ideas on performance and actor’s body and figure. On the other hand, Maurice Merleau-Ponty is a existential phenomenologist whose central idea on embodiment is considerable. According to him, every person is aware of his or her body through the world as he is aware of the world through his or her body. In this research, Oscar Schlemmer’s Triadisches Ballet and some of his other visual works have been examined based on Merleau-Ponty’s views. The result shows that the Oscar Schlemmer’s proposed body for actors, based on their livelihood experience, is a mechanical body influenced by geometric shapes which resembles cookie dolls. This body can be interpreted regarding Cubism, Futurism and Constructivism art movements.
