Body studies go back to mind-body dualism, the view that is known with its most important commentators, Plato and Descartes. They believed in the separation of the body and mind. However, in the late 1960s, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, a French-based phenomenologist, went beyond the previous view and introduced embodiment. Body studies embrace an infinite range of body domains like women-men, urban-rural and individual-social bodies. Body is a substance that lives in the world with its own customs, ideas and experiences. Man has different bodies which is known as the plurality of the body. In times of necessity, he knows to call which one of these bodies and forget the rest. This also comes true when an actor wants to come to the stage. In the early 20th century, Oscar Schlemmer propounded new ideas on performance and actor’s body and figure. On the other hand, Maurice Merleau-Ponty is a existential phenomenologist whose central idea on embodiment is considerable. According to him, every person is aware of his or her body through the world as he is aware of the world through his or her body. In this research, Oscar Schlemmer’s Triadisches Ballet and some of his other visual works have been examined based on Merleau-Ponty’s views. The result shows that the Oscar Schlemmer’s proposed body for actors, based on their livelihood experience, is a mechanical body influenced by geometric shapes which resembles cookie dolls. This body can be interpreted regarding Cubism, Futurism and Constructivism art movements.
