It could be argued that in the history of Western theatre, no figure is as entangled with the problem of “the gaze” and “being seen” as Pentheus in Euripides’ The Bacchae. Pentheus, the young king of Thebes, does not come to tragedy because of what he does, but because of what he wishes to see. He asks Dionysus to take him to the mountain disguised in women’s clothing so that he can secretly watch the nocturnal rites of the Maenads. This contradictory desire — to see without being seen — makes Pentheus, in the words of George Rodosthenous, the first spectator in the history of theatre. But the issue in The Bacchae goes beyond simple voyeurism. In order to look, Pentheus accepts the condition of humiliation: he puts on women’s clothes, cuts his hair, and exposes himself to Dionysus’ mocking gaze. This twofold structure — the forbidden gaze, conscious deprivation, intensifying pleasure, and ultimately punishment — is not confined to a Greek tragedy. This structure is an archetype for the sadomasochistic relationship between actor and spectator in theatre. The main question of this article is whether Pentheus can be regarded as an archetype for the sadomasochistic spectator, for whom conscious deprivation of access to the actor’s body intensifies visual pleasure, while the actor is likewise nourished by this awareness. And whether Dionysus, as the legislator of this game, represents theatre’s unique capacity to legalize the forbidden gaze. This study, carried out descriptively and analytically through close reading of the text, shows that the sadomasochistic structure of looking in The Bacchae — with its three poles of Pentheus (the masochistic spectator), Dionysus (the lawgiver of the fourth wall), and the Maenads (the body as object/subject) — is a foundational archetype for the actor-spectator relationship in theatre. The structure also shows that the fourth wall functions not as a barrier to illusion, but as a condition for visual pleasure and the legalization of the sadomasochism of looking.
