Sanford Meisner and Terry Schreiber, emphasizing the expressive behaviors of the body and the emotions that arise from them, have each explored how actors engage with dramatic characters. Meisner guides the actor toward an authentic stage presence by eliminating intellectualization and fostering truthful behavior under imaginary circumstances. In contrast, Schreiber places significant emphasis on analyzing the deep psychosomatic layers that inform the hidden motivations of the character. This study comparatively examines Meisner’s technique—centered on moment-to-moment responsiveness—and Schreiber’s training approach, which focuses on the actor’s dynamic interaction with the text. The aim is to investigate the parallels and distinctions between Meisner’s acting technique and Schreiber’s character-development methodology in order to enrich acting pedagogy through a more nuanced understanding of effective strategies for character analysis. Methodologically, this is analytical-comparative research conducted through library resources. Data analysis has been performed qualitatively, employing a non-probability sampling method for participant selection. Findings indicate that while both approaches pursue realism and authenticity in performance, they may function complementarily despite their fundamental philosophical differences. The integration of Meisner’s spontaneous, stimulus-based reactivity with Schreiber’s in-depth psychosomatic character analysis offers a comprehensive framework for understanding, creating, and developing believable stage characters.
