The subject of this article is to explain the meaning of the concept of modernity in the thought and dramatic works of Gregory Yeghikian
based on the ideology of social democracy of the Hunchakian Party. This playwright, who came to Iran in 1289 as a representative of the Hunchakian Social Democratic Party, was the first playwright to introduce socialist ideology in the history of Iranian dramatic literature in a coherent and purposeful manner and interpret the concept of modernity on this basis. Before turning to drama,Yeghikian had taken a stand against the influence of Soviet communism in Iran and Mirza Kuchak Khan’s temporary association with them, in order to defend social democracy, in addition to adapting this ideology to the conditions of Iran during the late Qajar period, and also wrote reports on the events of the seventeen-month revolution in Gilan.
Yaqiqian's goal was to familiarize the revolutionary youth of Iran with socialist and democratic ideas. Accordingly, between 1924 and 1936, he wrote plays, defining theater as a mirror of human virtues and flaws, a praise of human morality, and a means of refining the morals of Iranians.
In the author's opinion, in order to understand the views and actions of Yeghikian one must keep in mind the restriction that all these definitions can only be interpreted within the framework of his social democratic ideology and the party he belongs to. If such an assumption is correct, then in order to answer the question of what the concept of modernity means in Yeghikian's dramatic works and how it has been interpreted, one must focus on Yeghikian's political thought and, consequently, the semantic field of his socialist thought. One of the findings of the research is that modernity in the thought and dramatic works of Gregory Yeghikian implies a change in the bourgeois order of politics and society, the purpose of which is to give importance to the role of a human being with rights in society and politics; the prerequisite for such a thing is a struggle with capitalism and the bourgeoisie in order to establish equality for the benefit of individuals of the nation and other nations.
